Cadets from Alnwick Detachment were out in force today to support the annual Alnwick Gardens Duck Race.

The race, in support of the Grace House North East children's hospice, saw some 36,000 brightly coloured rubber ducks travelling down the Garden's Grand Cascade over a three hour period.

SSI Ralph Brown, Detachment Commander and big kid at heart, couldn't resist taking a dip in the cascade too.

Apologies it has taken a few days to write the first entry of the Annual Camp blog, but everyone in W Company has been rushed off their feet.

Hopefully by now you folks at home should have heard from your youngster, but if you haven't rest assured that we're all in one piece.

We've been fortunate to have glorious sunny days so far this week, which is helping to top up everyone's tan nicely. It also means we're working the cadets less during the day and keeping in the shade and well watered.

On Sunday and Monday the Company spent two days on the ranges, where we fired the new L98A2 rifle. On Tuesday the cadets visited Stockport for swimming, before returning to camp for the obstacle course and climbing wall.

Tuesday also saw four of our cadets get promoted, namely: Cdt Nicole Beaman, Cdt Meg Straker and Cdt Will Young to Lance Corporal; and Cpl Guy Renner-Thompson to Sergeant.

The new NCOs were presented with their update brassards in a surprise presentation after some sneaky sewing by the Company Commander, Major Sue Haughie.

The cadets have also been visited by Colonels Simon Marr and Steve Hopper of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. Col Hopper commands our local TA infantry, the 5th Battalion, Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, which has a Javelin Platoon based in Alnwick.

Col Marr took the opportunity to present SMI Karl Dullaghan with his Cadet Forces Medal, which is awarded for 12 years service as an adult.

On Wednesday and Thursday the cadets will be field training out on the area.

Hopefully things will quieten down over the weekend and more photos and blog posts will follow.
