A Cycling We Go 06/02/2010

SSI Becky Matthewson and SI Damien Tinlin of Broomhill Detachment have just returned from a weekend of fresh air and stunning scenery, cycling the highways and byways of Upper Weardale.

But far from touring the local hostelries, they were there for the serious business of learning how to lead cadets cycling through the rural wilderness.

Their new leisure cycling qualification will enable them to take groups of up to ten cadets on mountain bike rides.

During the course they learnt how to maintain the bikes and deal with incidents that arose en-route. They'll have to opportunity to put their new skills into practice very shortly, with mountain biking (er, I mean "leisure cycling") featuring in the Annual Camp programme.

Whoever said riding a bike was as easy as riding a bike were obviously mistaken!

The OC W Company, Major Mark Ewart, made a guest appearance at a recent Broomhill Detachment presentation evening.

Top of the bill was Cpl Dale Thomson, who has successfully completed his Duke of Edinburgh's Silver Award. That's no mean feat to achieve, with most cadets lucky to get  their Bronze.

Cdts Jordan Harnett and Josh Truman were presented with their Team Northumbria badges, after skillfully representing the County at the Brigade Skill at Arms Meeting at Strensall a fortnight ago.

The OC also had the pleasure of promoting Cdt Brandon Mayes to LCpl. LCpl Mayes, who has been with Broomhill since early 2008, will take on greater responsibility in the training and admin of the Detachment.

Congratulations to Broomhill Detachment for their achievements.

Thursday 25th March saw the basic training cadets be given their cap badge & Hackle, as they formally became members of the detachment.  Ten new cadets have been enrolled into Alnwick, and seven into Broomhill.  Unfortunately the parade clashed with one of the school ski trips, so four of the Alnwick cadets missed the night.  They will be enrolled informally at the next parade night.

County Cadet Commandant, Colonel David Smith, gave out the basic training pass awards, along with best recruit, best cadet and promotions.

Congratulations to all the cadets for a very good night!

Alnwick:
Best Recruit: Cdt Beveridge
Best Cadet: Cdt Netherwood
Promotion: L/Cpl Netherwood (from cadet)

Broomhill
Best Recruit: Cdt Eason
Best Cadet: Cdt Mayes
Three Star Award: L/Cpl Wintrip
Promotion: Cpl Wintrip (from L/Cpl)

Alnwick and Broomhill Detachments have just returned from a successful week's ski trip in Samoens, France.

Ten cadets from Alnwick and four from Broomhill along with Staff Sergeants Ralph Brown and Becky Matthewson attended the trip, raising funds at various events throughout the year.

The trip was a great success, with a mix of cadets having some experience, to absolute beginners. By the end of the week all cadets were skiing from Samoens, right across the mountains to the villages of Morillon and Les Carroz and off-pisting along great runs such as the Marvel, the Dahu and the Sairon.

Lt Lister and the Rothbury cadets head out on their trip to Samoens on March 6th, where they will also be looking to have a great time.

Members of the ski party are pictured below (from L to R): L/Cpl Mark Newson, S/Sgt Michael Sargent, L/Cpl Will Young, L/Cpl Mark Robertson, L/Cpl Kevin Straughan, Cdt Lydia  Donaldson, L/Cpl Joe Pendrich, L/Cpl Ed Inkster, L/Cpl Luke Wintrip, Cdt Kate Netherwood, L/Cpl Meg Straker, Cdt Emily Brunton, L/Cpl Ellie Tribe & L/Cpl Callum Turnbull.

Further photos of the trip will appear in Alnwick's photo gallery shortly.

Cadets from Alnwick Detachment were out in force today to support the annual Alnwick Gardens Duck Race.

The race, in support of the Grace House North East children's hospice, saw some 36,000 brightly coloured rubber ducks travelling down the Garden's Grand Cascade over a three hour period.

SSI Ralph Brown, Detachment Commander and big kid at heart, couldn't resist taking a dip in the cascade too.

More photos in the Detachment's Photo Gallery.

W Company cadets recently took part in a 15 mile sponsored walk from Cresswell to Alnmouth on the north-Northumberland coast.

The eleven youngsters, from our Alnwick and Broomhill Detachments, were raising funds for the annual W Company ski trip, which is taking part in January 2010.

SSI Ralph Brown shuttled backwards and forwards in the minibus and mountain bike to ensure safety coverage.

SI Becky Matthewson (and Rocky the dog) accompanied the cadets throughout the brisk beach walk, which included a well deserved fish and chip break at Amble.

The cadets who took part, shown in the image above, were LCpl Brett Rogerson, LCpl Joe Pendrich, LCpl Ed Inkster, Cdt Meg Straker, Cdt Kate Netherwood, Cdt Callum Turnbull, Cdt Will Young, LCpl Luke Wintrip, Cdt Mark Newson, Cdt Mark Robertson and Cdt Lydia Donaldson.

Armed Forces Day 06/27/2009

Cadets from Alnwick, Amble and Broomhill Detachments have been taking part in the UK's first official Armed Forces Day.

In Amble cadets from Amble and Broomhill took part in a small parade and provided a range of different activities on the Town Square for members of the public to participate in. The cadets also provided an information stand and took the opportunity to recruit some of the more inquisitive local youngsters.

In Alnwick cadets from the local Detachment took part in a parade through the historic town with veterans and fellow cadets from the Air Training Corps. Unfortunately the Army and RAF were a bit too busy fighting wars to be there.

The Duke of Northumberland, whose family has a close affinity with the Fusiliers, took the salute.

Photographs of both events will be appearing shortly in Alnwick Detachment's photo gallery.

Druridge Bay 10k 05/24/2009

Cadets from Alnwick and Broomhill Detachments spent this weekend helping with the annual Druridge Bay 10k Charity Run.

The run, set in the picturesque surroundings of Druridge Bay Country Park, was in support of the Grace House North East Children's Hospice. The charity slant was evident by some of the bizarre outfits the runners were wearing.

The weekend is also the ideal opportunity for the cadets to explore the beach, socialise and enjoy a barbecue bite to eat. The park warden agreed to the cadets camping in the park so they could get an early start in the Sunday morning.

The cadets assisted with the setting up, marshalling and packing away of the event. Northumbria ACF's world famous climbing wall was also available for any members of the public brave enough to have a shot.

A special mention also goes to Lt Barry Lister, Detachment Commander of Rothbury Detachment, who managed to complete the course in just under an hour.
